Gary Young


Introduction

Gary started writing professionally over twenty years ago and has a number of award winning films and theatre productions to his credit. Most notably the British thriller, HARRY BROWN, starring Michael Caine. In 1997 and 1998, he worked with director/choreographer Mark Murphy and V-Tol Dance Company, as well writing the libretto in 2002 for the opera, ‘Festus’ with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and ‘Running Girl’ for Boilerhouse Theatre Company, which won ‘The List’ magazines best theatrical production of 2003. In 2000, Gary wrote his first feature film, ‘SHOOTERS’ a gritty crime thriller, directed by Colin Teague and starring Gerard Butler and Ioan Gruffudd. ‘SPIVS’ in 2004, about a small time con man, starring Ken Stott and Nick Moran and in 2006, the WW2 action thriller, ‘THE LAST DROP’ starring Billy Zane, Michael Madsen, Laurence Fox, Rafe Spall and Sean Pertwee, both for Carnaby Films. In 2009 he wrote ‘THE TOURNAMENT’ a high concept action thriller, directed by Scott Mann and starring Robert Carlyle, Ving Rhames and Kelly Hu. Also in 2009, Gary wrote the screenplay ‘HARRY BROWN’, starring two time Oscar winner, Sir Michael Caine, about an elderly pensioner living on a crime ridden housing estate, who turns vigilante when his best friend is murdered. ‘HARRY BROWN’ was the winner of the Empire Magazine’s ‘Best British Film’ Award 2010 and nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough film of 2010’ at The National Movie Awards. In 2010 Gary wrote ‘MADAM SAMURAI’ the two volume graphic novel, published by Scar Comics, about a female samurai who pursues a notorious serial killer in Victorian London. In 2011 Gary directed a short film, ‘HENRY’, commissioned by Northern Film & Media and starring, Tom Cullen (Downtown Abbey) and Finbar Lynch. Gary has recently developed ‘HENRY’ into a feature film. Gary has just directed his feature film debut TWO GRAVES, a micro budget thriller shot in his own town in the North East of England, starring, Cathy Tyson (MONA LISA & BAND OF GOLD) Katie Jarvis (Andrea Arnold's FISH TANK) and Dave Johns (Ken Loach's I DANIEL BLAKE) David Hayman (TABOO) Josh Herdman (HARRY POTTER) Two Graves has the honour of closing the British Urban Film Festival at the Curzon Cinema in Soho London, June 2018. As well as working on a number of TV projects and commissions for TV, he has also wrote an episode for the successful ITV detective drama series, VERA, starring Brenda Blethyn. 

IN DEVELOPMENT: Gary has a number of projects in development, both nationally and internationally, including the project MOGWAI, a sci fi horror, developed with award winning Spanish director, Alejandro Suarez Lozano. MOGWAI has already won two awards in 2016, as part of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the main Bucheon Award and the Sponsored Award by an Investment /Production Company in Singapore, specialised in International Co-Productions. Currently under option with Aurora Media and Kathy Morgan International. Scheduled for production in South East Asia at the end of 2018. Gary is currently developing two projects with Jin Ishimoto of Element 8 Entertainment. MACABRE, is a TV series, in which a Scotland Yard detective with an eternal soul and a fallen angel, investigate the bizarre and unexplained. The second is a TV series set in Australia, in conjunction Michael Robertson of Prodigy Movies. BONE RIVER is an hour long, complex, dark thriller with a returnable central character of a female detective, in the vein of TRUE DETECTIVE and the Scandi-noir TV shows such as THE BRIDGE and THE KILLING. Amongst other projects in development is a three part mini series for television, MURDER AT THE ROYAL FREE, with BAFTA award winner, Red Productions, in conjunction with award winning New Zealand producer, John Barnett, set in the 90’s and based on true events surrounding the first and only contract killing, executed by a woman in the UK.
